Barcode label generator
Give an item a barcode, or replace a damaged label. Type the code, choose the symbology, set how many copies and print. Nothing is uploaded: the barcode is drawn on your device.
Which barcode should I use?
Code 128 is the flexible one: letters, numbers and punctuation, any length. Use it for your own SKUs and shelf labels. It is not a retail barcode — a shop's till will not read your internal code as a product.
EAN-13 is the retail barcode on most packaged goods in Europe and much of the world.UPC-A is the 12-digit North American retail version. Both need a valid check digit; if you type 12 digits for EAN-13 or 11 for UPC-A, the generator calculates the check digit for you. A code that is already 13 or 12 digits is validated, and an invalid one is refused rather than printed wrongly.
Do not print a retail barcode for a product that already has one. Duplicating a manufacturer's EAN creates two identities for the same item, and the till, the supplier and your inventory will disagree.
Printing that actually scans
- Size matters. A Code 128 label under about 25 mm wide is hard for a phone camera. Give the bars 30 mm or more where the label allows.
- Quiet zone. Leave at least 2 mm of white space on each side of the bars. A barcode touching the edge of a printed label often fails.
- Contrast, not colour. Black bars on white paper. Red, orange and metallic labels can be invisible to a red-light scanner.
- Do not scale unevenly. If you resize, keep the aspect ratio; a stretched barcode changes the bar widths and stops scanning.
- Test one before printing fifty. Scan the first label with the phone you will use on the floor, then print the sheet.
- Laminate or use a label sheet if the shelf is damp or the item is handled. A torn bar is a missing item at the next count.
Labels in Mobile Inventory
The Android app prints a Code128 label sheet as a PDF: choose the items and the number of copies (up to 50 at a time), then print or share the PDF to a printer. That sheet is connected to the item record, so the code on the label is the code the app scans. This page is the standalone tool for a code you want to create by hand, and for anyone trying the product without an account.
The web portal does not print per-row labels yet; label printing is a phone-app action today. Readthe label help article for the app's steps and the printer setup.
After the label is on the shelf
Add the barcode to the item in Mobile Inventory so a scan opens that item rather than a blank form. Scanning a known barcode opens the item; an unknown barcode opens a new item with the code filled in. Then a delivery, a count or a sale is one scan away.
If you are labelling a whole shelf, print in the order you will count and put the labels in the same order — left to right, top to bottom. The next count will be faster, and the person doing it will thank you.
